I’m a photographer from north Hertfordshire. I take photos on DSLRs, compact cameras, film cameras and my phone. This website showcases some of the pictures I’ve taken on my phones over the past few years.
I started taking photos with an iPhone back in 2009 when I got my first, an iPhone 3GS.
Photography with the iPhone took a big leap with the iPhone 4 and the improved camera that came with the 4 and the 4S.
I stuck with an iPhone for the 5s and 6S and then moved over to Huawei with the P20 and P40, mainly because their cameras were so good. Unfortunately, when the USA blocked Huawei from accessing Google apps the use I got from the Huawei phones diminished and in 2022 I went over to Samsung with the Galaxy S22 Ultra which I used up until the end of May 2024. I currently use a Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra.

Shopping in Stevenage
I went to Stevenage today with my wife and eldest. They wanted to do some Christmas shopping. I thought I could pop into the Three mobile phone shop and upgrade my phone to a new iPhone 6S plus. Unfortunately, they don't stock the 128GB version and told me I would have to order direct from [...]
More Ice Cream Selfies
Another collection of ice cream selfies from this summer, not including the summer holiday ice cream selfies.
Cornwall Seashores
On our Cornwall holiday this year we were only 15 minutes from the beach. If we weren't walking along the coast to Watergate Beach, we were walking near some other beach. Here is a selection of seaside shots captured on the iPhone.
Cornwall Selfies
We went to Cornwall for our summer holidays again. This year we were just outside Newquay at Watergate Beach. The weather was pretty poor for most of the 14 days, but I didn't let that me eating plenty of ice cream.
New Watch
|I got a couple of new watches recently. They were for a specific purpose, I don't collect watches, and they were cheap as the came from China. I thought I'd take a couple of shots with the iPhone. No additional lighting, just put on the rockery in the garden.
Yachting on the Broads
I went sailing on the Norfolk Broads again this year. This time we had a bigger boat; a 36 foot yacht. It was a pretty adventurous two days. We managed to run aground a couple of times, my brother nearly fell in and lost his mobile phone. We managed to get tangled up in a [...]
Opening Night
On the 19th June I was invited to the opening night of the short movie I was the stills photographer for back in the summer of 2014. "Hand it Back" is an independent film shot in Letchworth. It received its world première at the Broadway Cinema in Letchworth as part of the Letchworth Festival. The [...]
Camera Club at the Festival
In an effort to increase membership of the camera club, I organised our attendance at the opening day of the Letchworth Festival. Normally, this event is well attended, there are stands and stalls around the Broadway which usually has bands playing on a large stage. Unfortunately, the weather was awful, it rained all day long. [...]
Cheetahs -v- Gladiators
Sunday 7th June saw me spending my birthday down at Colney Heath photographing the Hertfordshire Cheetahs in their match against the Colchester Gladiators. As usual I took some shots on the phone. These ones are all pre-match and some show the warm up procedure for the team.
Hipstamatic around the Broadway
Another walk over to the town centre and trying out one of the newer Hipstamatic packs. As usual, I can't recall what the combination is.
England -v- Russia
In May I went down to the Hatfield Sports Village to shoot the first ever Women's American football fully kitted international game. The GB team took on a team from Russia in a full-on 11 v 11 kitted game. The British girls won the historic match. I took a few iPhone shots before and during [...]
Hipstamatic in Town
I thought I'd try out a couple of the newer film packs in Hipstamatic on my walk round town today. Unfortunately, I can't recall which films packs I was playing with.
Cheetahs -v- Cats
The 19th May saw me take on a double-header of American football down at the Hertfordshire Cheetah's home ground. I shot the senior team in their game against the Cambridgeshire Cats. I then shot the Junior team in their loss against the East Kent Mavericks juniors.
Mach Loop
I arranged to meet up with some fellow photographers from the Photography Forum in the hills of North Wales. The location is known as the "Mach Loop", a series of hills and valleys where military pilots train in low level flyng. We were there to take photos of military aircraft who use the hills and [...]
New Year’s Day Walk
A couple of days after New Year’s Day this year the family went up to Therfield Heath near Royston for a walk. I took my selfie stick with me…
Happy Christmas
I got a selfie stick before Christmas. So I decided it was a good time to try it out.
Sunset over Harkness
I was putting up the Christmas lights and realised I needed quite a few spare bulbs. I must have visited about 6 shops in the town centre. Most didn't have bulbs, those that did, didn't have the right type. So I drove down the the garden centre at Harkness, between Hitchin and Letchworth. As I [...]
Herts Hurricanes -v- Essex Blades
On the 1st December I was back at Hatfield University shooting the Hurricanes against the Essex Blades. I took quite a few shots of the Hurricanes warming up on my iPhone. The more astsute will notice the Blades, in blue, are wearing shirts with “Colchester Gladiators” thereon. Apparently, the Blades’ shirts weren’t ready in time [...]
Brighton Tsunami -v- Hertfordshire Hurricanes
On the 30th November, 2014, I accompanied the University of Hertfordshire Hurricanes on their trip down to Brighton to play the Brighton Tsunami. It’s the second time I have shot a game down at Berighton’s home ground. Hertfordshire won, as they usually do during their regular season games.
Some Product Photography
When taking product shots, an iPhone might not be the first camera you’d think of using. So I thought I’d try a few shots utilising my new LED constant lights. I bought them recently for tabletop/macro photography. Two lights lit the subject and the iPhone was put on a mini tripod to take the shots.
Around the Town
Just chilling around the town centre and snapping shots using different apps. I love the shapes, patterns and colours beneath our feet and seem to have a rather large collection of photos of pavements.
Trip to the Shard
On the 12th September Jane and I went up to London to visit the Shard. The trip was a Christmas present from our girls and it took us 9 months to get there. We chose a lovely day, fortunately. It must be awful to pay the money and get up there only to see clouds [...]
Filming in Letchworth
In August I got to try something new. I was the stills photographer for an independent film company making a movie short in Letchworth. It involved a weekend of shooting on location around Letchworth. When I met the director for the first time, they were already into the shoot on Norton Common. On the following [...]
Watford Cheetahs -v- London Hornets
Sunday 3rd August saw me back at the University of Hatfield shooting American football. The Watford Cheetahs are playing their home games at Hatfield this season, so it’s a home from home for me as I spend each winter shooting the Hurricanes here. I was trying out a couple of iPhone apps and filters.
Watford Cheetahs -v- Bury Saints
On the 27th July I boarded the Watford Cheetahs bus to go up to Suffolk to shoot them against the Bury Saints. I like to take a few shots on the phone if I get the chance. It is probably better suited to the static player portrait type shots as the actual game play can [...]
My father, brother and sister, hired a sailing boat on the Norfolk Broads for a few days, so we went up to meet them for the day. The weather wasn't great but it remained dry until we ended our day of sailing at one of the pubs, whereupon it absolutely chucked it down. I took [...]
Ice Cream Selfies
I love ice cream. Fortunately, we have a friendly ice cream man whose van stops right outside my house. I thought it might be good (not for my health) to take a series of selfies every time I had an ice cream. Since taking these shots, I have amassed many more Ice Cream Selfies.
Broadway Gardens
It was a nice sunny day so I thought I’d try out one of the iPhone apps in the town centre. Just a few shots trying out some of the filter settings. I can't recall which app I used off the top of my head.
Cheetah Seniors & Juniors
The 4th May saw me popping down to Hatfield University to shoot a double-header with the Watford Cheetahs. The senior team were playing the Ipswich Cardinals (Watford won) and then following that game the Cheetah juniors played the Solent Thrashers (Watford lost). Unfortunately, one of the Cheetah juniors got injured during the game and had [...]
Ouse Valley Eagles
The first game of the summer football season was this week. I drove up to Bedford International Athletics Stadium to shoot the Ouse Valley Eagles. For the last few years I have shot the Bedfordshire Blue Raiders at Bedford, but they amalgamated over the off-season with the Milton Keynes Pathfinders to form a new team. [...]
By Morrisons
Just a few shots taken on one of my walks into town. All the pics were taken around Morrisons’ car park.
A Walk on Oughtonhead Common
W e popped over to Hitchin to have a walk around Oughtonhead Common. We usually walk down from the road and into the common and then up along the river and back. Tess came too and I grabbed a few shots on the iPhone, as well as one of my other cameras.
Kimpton Church
Sadly, one of the members of my choir died recently. The choir sang at his funeral service at the Church of St Peter and St Paul in Kimpton village. After the service I took a few moments to wander around the grounds of the church taking a few photos.
Outside Morrisons
I quite often take photos on my walks into town. These shots were taken in the area outside Morrisons supermarket in Letchworth town centre. The row of seats leads to a bust of Sir Ebeneezer Howard, founder of Letchworth Garden City.
Letchworth Street
Trying out one of the B & W apps on the iPhone while doing some street photography around Letchworth town centre.
Hurricanes -v- Buccaneers
On February 2nd I went down to Hertfordshire University to shoot the Hurricanes playing the BNU Buccaneers. Hertfordshire won the match, they usually win most if not all of their regular season games. I took a few more shots on the iPhone than I normally do. They played in their away kit, which is white, [...]
A Bit of Street
I wanted to try a bit of street photography in the town centre. I set the camera to use one of the camera apps that offers a very contrasty black and white mode.
St Albans Abbey
From time to time I have to go to St Albans to collect music for my choir; we use a shop on Holywell Hill. Two minutes walk from the shop is St Albans Abbey and I usually spend a little while walking round the outside and taking a few photographs.
Birdwatching in the Snow
I decided to try and shoot some of the birds in the garden on a cold January day. I have a popup hide which has two seats. It’s quite cosy, but if you’re sitting still in the cold, you do need warm clothing. There wasn’t much doing so I took a few selfies.
Birdwatching on a Winter’s Day
I decided to try and shoot some of the birds in the garden on a cold January day. I have a popup hide which has two seats. It’s quite cosy, but if you’re sitting still in the cold, you do need warm clothing. There wasn’t much doing so I took a few selfies.
Tess on the Common
I took Tess for a walk on the Common, as I do from time to time. Due to the really wet winter we had, the Common was still pretty flooded, certainly the wettest I've seen it for quite a few years.
Trip to Cambridge
We went to Cambridge today. While my wife and youngest were shopping & spending their Christmas money and vouchers, I wandered around the city centre with my camera. Whilst most of the shots were taken on a DSLR, I did take a few on the iPhone too. Just off the market square is a wonderful [...]
Boxing Night
We had a quiet evening in on Boxing night so I took the opportunity to grab a few shots. Sarah brought her African snails home with her from university, you can see one of them here, I think this one is called Luna. The cider and sweets was a present from one of my daughters. [...]
Around the Cinema
These shots are all taken within a few yards of the Broadway Cinema in Letchworth town centre. The Town Lodge is opposite. These two shots were taken with one of the iPhone HDR apps. Then there are two hots of the Broadway itself, one of the entrance and the other of one of the iconic [...]
Hurricanes -v- Nemesis
I’ve shot over 100 games of British American football in the past 5-6 years. On many of them, certainly in the last 3 years, I have tried to take some shots on my non-standard sports photography setup, i.e my compact camera or my iPhone. I’m quite lucky in that I get access to the players [...]
Letchworth at Night
One thing the phone cameras have never really excelled at is low light photography. The sensor is just so tiny that getting a good dynamic range without any noise in low light is near impossible, which is why so many photos taken at night and uploaded onto Facebook look so awful. I tried some low [...]
RTC
I drove over to Stevenage to sort out a new iPhone. I wasn’t impressed with the offers Orange were giving me to upgrade from the 4S, so I decided to go for Three’s ‘unlimited data’ offer. As I was driving down the dual carriageway into Stevenage, I became aware of a loud sound from the [...]
Photobombing Dog
Jane bought me a little gizmo for my iPhone. It’s a remote shutter release so you can set up the iPhone somewhere, load the remote shutter camera app and then press the button on the device and the phone will take a picture. So I tried to use it to set up a selfie in [...]
Harsh B & W
Iaux_dropcap]'m always taking shots when I go around the town centre. It’s interesting photographing the same scenes and buildings and trying to get a different aspect or result. These were taken with the ‘Provoke’ monochrome app on the most contrasty setting.
Lincoln Cathedral Visit
My middle daughter is currently studying at Nottingham Trent University out on their remote campus at Brackenhurst. We popped up for a visit and whilst there went into Lincoln for a visit round and some lunch. I’d not been to Lincoln for many years, since before the children were born when we were doing some [...]
Lincoln Visit
Whilst visiting my daughter at Nottingham Trent Uni, we went into Lincoln for a small visit. I left the females to go off and do their shopping and lunch thing, while I walked around the city centre with a couple of cameras. I discovered Street Photography this year and tried a few shots out.
Cycle Ride through the Farm
I went out on a bike ride today. I started off in the town centre and took a few photos of the fountain in the Broadway, and one of my favourite Letchworth buildings, the Nexus Building. Then I headed out into the countryside. I managed to find about the most waterlogged, boggy field system in [...]
Family Snaps
Just a few post Xmas shots of the family. I think this was using the TinType app.
Snaps around Town
Just a few snaps taken on a walk around the town centre. I had a little play with one of the apps which supports changing the depth of field.
Autumn in November
I took some photos on a dog walk over at Norton Common. There is still a great deal of colour on the column.
Wow!
I was on a night ride around part of the Greenway. As I came up towards the Hitchin Road, around a corner, I was met by a Barn Owl sitting at the side of the cycle track. It remained there long enough for me to grab my phone out of a pocket and fire off [...]
Trip to Southwold
I had the half-term week off work in October. As we hadn't had a summer holiday we were trying to go on day trips on the time that I did have available. We popped up to the North Norfolk coast. We visit the area a lot and usually stay near Cromer. We walked down to [...]
Visit to Eastbourne
My dad, brother and sister live in Eastbourne. We don't get down there enough, but it was nice to have a visit this September. The weather was great, so we went for a walk along the sea front.
Paralympics
We went to the Paralympics and witnessed one of the best live events I've ever seen. Whilst we did manage to get tickets for the Olympics, I was refused time off work so couldn't go, so our visit to the Paralympics was the only experience I had of the London 2012 Games. What an experience [...]
Wrest Park
As long-standing members of English heritage, we have free entry to Wrest Park. It's the nearest English Heritage property to use so we tend to go quite often.
Trip to Aldeburgh
Trip to Aldeburgh In September the family had a day trip out to Suffolk, to one of our favourite places in the country, Aldeburgh. Jane and I used to go there before we had a family. It was in Aldeburgh that our interest in family history began when we visited a genealogy stall at a [...]
Ashwell Show
We went to the annual Ashwell Show which is out in a village just north of us. I took a few shots with the phone, most of which were in the tractor display.
Letchworth Car Show
There was a mini car show in the town centre today. Unfortunately it was raining but this meant there were less people crowded round the cars, so it made it easier to get a few shots. Also, the raindrops on the highly polished metal surfaces can make for some interesting shots.
Cycling around the Greenway
I bought a new mountain bike recently and have started regular cycling. These shots were taken on a ride around the 13 mile Greenway which goes right around the town of Letchworth.
The Cathedral
Technically it's not a cathedral at all, it's an abbey, but I always love taking shots of it whenever I visit St Albans.
Visit to Overstrand
We popped up to Overstrand on the north Norfolk Coast this week. It's one of our favourite destinations and we always enjoy walks along the beach to Cromer.
Standalone Farm
W/aux_dropcap]e used to go to Standalone Farm all the time while the girls were growing up; we had season tickets each year. We popped up there recently when we had some family visitors.
Graduation at Nottingham
W/aux_dropcap]e went up to Nottingham for Cathryn's graduation. She achieved a first class honours degree in psychology and was presented with her degree in the city centre theatre. I took a few shots on the walk from the car park to the venue.
At the Lavender Fields
We have a lavender farm not far from us down at Ickleford. Tess quite often gets walked around the fields just on the Letchworth side of the lavender and we sometimes wander down to take in the sight and grab a few pics. These shots were processed on the iPhone.
A Walk around the Lakes
I managed to turn up for work an hour early the other day, so I took the opportunity for a little walk around Stanborough Lakes which is opposite where I work. I used to spend many happy hours at the lakes when I was a kid. We were boating, sailing or generally mucking about.
Garden Frog
We have a little waterfall in the garden. In the pool at the bottom we usually have up to 6 or 7 frogs who often come out on wet nights. This one was in the garden as I was coming in from the shed at half two in the morning. I only had the iPhone [...]
Visiting Cambridge
I had a visit up to Cambridge. I took the bike on the back of the car and cycled in from the park & ride. I took a few pics around the familiar places and also a couple in the shopping centre.
Powercam & the Town Hall
I had a little play around with the Powercam app today. All these shots were taken with Powercam which has a range of quite quirky filters. The beauty of the app is that you can see the filters live on screen before you take the shot, so you know exactly what it will look like, [...]
Tess by the River
A couple of years ago we discovered a lovely river walk out the back of Henlow. Tess loves it and although she was initially a bit reticent about water, she now loves going in the river. These shots were taken after she came out of the river and was getting her breath back. Processed on [...]

I was invited over to Coldhams Common in Cambridge to shoot the varsity match between the Cambridge Pythons and the Oxford Lancers.
Cheetahs -v- Pumas
I went all the way down to Maidstone to shoot the Watford Cheetahs play the Maidstone Pumas. Maidstone haven't been a very successful team and today was no exception. They play in the grounds of a college and I was taken with the design of one of the buildings, so I took a few shots [...]

In June 2011 I went down to Finsbury Park to shoot the London Blitz play in European competition against the Soledad Gold Diggers. I took some shots on my iPhone 3S.
Bluebell Woods
Hitchwood near Codicote is one of our favourite places. We have been there every year since the children were born and usually go when the bluebells are out. I usually take my DSLR but also take a few shots on the iPhone. These are all taken with Hipstamatic.

Trip to Brighton
We went down to Brighton to see family. It poured with rain but we went for a walk on the pier, and had an ice cream all the same.
